Winning Bay wines 'headed for greatness'

TASTY NEWS: Nicholas Buck sees more success ahead. PHOTO/FILE
The Hawke's Bay wine industry is on a roll - driven by fast-growing
exports and a continuing run of top international competition results.
Hawke's Bay Winegrowers chairman Nicholas Buck was delighted to deliver
another dose of good news at last Monday's annual meeting.
"The time and effort and hard work that has been going in is being seen in sales," he said.
Since the 2007-08 season export sales of Hawke's Bay wines had increased by 48 per cent.
"That is a substantial number in just five years," Mr Buck said, adding
a prediction to where the region was heading in the global wine stakes.
"In 10 years' time Hawke's Bay will be known internationally as one of
the great wine-producing areas of the world."
That had already begun, through an ongoing series of competition
awards, but Mr Buck tempered it by describing the industry as "a long
game".
"There is still a long way for Hawke's Bay to go to realise its full
potential. But it is a momentum that is building and it is achievable
... people are continuing to develop expertise and experience - and they
are seeing that in their sales."
Hawke's Bay was continuing to attract international recognition
especially for its cabernet merlot blends, syrahs and chardonnays, Mr
Buck said.
The recent 2011 Winestate Awards, Australasia's biggest wine
competition, was dominated by Hawke's Bay wines in the reds category -
with the ultimate "Wine of the Year" award going to Craggy Range for its
2009 "Le Sol" syrah.
The trophy was presented at the official New Zealand award ceremony at
Cotter House in Auckland this week, delighting chief winemaker Rod
Easthope.
"Since the inaugural 2001 'Le Sol', every vintage has been
attention-grabbing - yet for different reasons," he said. "The 'Le Sol'
wine style has naturally evolved over the years and 2009 is at the
zenith of this evolution. A great vintage, fabulous site and exacting
viticulture made it all happen."
Crossroads picked up the award for Merlot of the Year with its Vineyard
Selection Kereru Road Merlot Cabernet 2009, while Villa Maria also
triumphed with a top award for its Reserve Malbec 2009.
Hawke's Bay Winegrowers executive officer Lyn Bevin said: "The real
story is revealed when we look at all the Winestate Award categories and
see that Hawke's Bay took the top prize for the red wine categories -
Merlot & Blends, Shiraz/Syrah and Other Reds.
"For a competition of over 11,000 Australian and New Zealand wines,
this is substantially significant. Not only are we selling coals to
Newcastle, we're winning in terms of recognition and quality too."
Mr Buck said such accolades "absolutely" had an impact on the international markets.

The
third phase of Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC 2011) ticketing opens on
Monday when Rugby fans from around the world will find out if they have
been successful in the ballots for tickets to the semi-finals and the
Final.
“I know many fans will be nervously
awaiting the results of the ballots as these tickets have been highly
sought after,” said Martin Snedden, CEO of Tournament Organiser Rugby
New Zealand 2011.
The ballots were open to
those fans who applied for tickets during the first two phases of RWC
2011 ticketing and who elected to enter into the ballots. Applicants
received one entry into each ballot they elected to enter into for each
ticket they applied for. Applicants who used a MasterCard® between
April 27 and November 21 2010, received double entries. For further
details on how the ballots work click here.
There
are 15,000 match tickets available in each of the three ballots.
Because each offer will consist of an opportunity to purchase two
tickets, a total of approximately 7,500 offers will be issued for each
match. Applications were received from just over 60,000 fans.
“These
tickets are scarce so for those who are successful this is a great
opportunity to be ringside at the crunch matches of New Zealand’s
biggest ever sports event.”
Successful fans
will receive an email from RNZ 2011 on Monday February 14 and a letter
soon afterwards with full details on how to secure and pay for their
tickets. In addition, the Customer Account Numbers of those successful
in the ballots will also be published on www.rugbyworldcup.com/finalsat 9am on Monday. This will allow entrants to search for their account number to see if they have been successful.
Fans have until 5pm Friday March 4 to secure their tickets.
Those
who have missed out can still secure tickets to the semi-finals and the
Final by purchasing Finals packages through the Official Hospitality
and Travel Programme. For more information, please visit www.rth2011.com.

What is NZ TOURISM STRATEGY 2015? ....SUSTAINABILITY—THE WAY AHEAD
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ‘…MEETS THE NEEDS OF THE PRESENT WITHOUT COMPROMISING THE ABILITY OF FUTURE GENERATIONS TO MEET THEIR OWN NEEDS’
The principles of kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and manaakitanga (hospitality) and are the basis for a uniquely New Zealand approach to sustainability. By delivering on these principles, the tourism sector will provide hospitality to its visitors while protecting and managing our culture and environment.
A sustainable tourism sector means that:
our customers will enjoy their time in New Zealand, and will want to travel here for the unique and sustainable tourism experiences we offer
tourism businesses will be financially profitable, able to reinvest in their businesses, and attract and retain the skilled workers they need
the natural environment will be protected and enhanced, and the environmental footprint of the tourism sector will continue to shrink we work with communities for mutual benefit.
Tourism relies more than any other sector on our continuing sustainability as a nation. This is because New Zealand itself is the product we are selling.
True sustainability reaches across all areas of life —environmental, economic, social, and cultural. These areas are interdependent and mutually reinforcing. For the tourism sector to prosper, we need to deliver on all of them.
Visitors see their experience as a whole, not as component parts. There is no point in providing comprehensive recycling facilities if our communities are unwelcoming, or delivering exemplary service if our streams are polluted. We need to make a greater commitment to using our resources more sustainably in order to protect both our environment and our economic potential.
Sustainable products and services are in growing demand globally. We already have a reputation for being ‘clean and green’. This has been reinforced by Tourism New Zealand’s 100% Pure New Zealand campaign.
Managing our reputation and delivering true sustainability will create opportunities that will benefit all New Zealand businesses, including those in tourism.
A sustainable tourism sector requires us to achieve a balance between running financially viable businesses, satisfying our customers, protecting our physical environment, and supporting our communities.
Among highlights in their NZ tourism survey (2007-2008):
Eight percent of all tourists (domestic & international) visited a winery
Auckland attracted the largest number of wine tourists (130,700!!)
Auckland attracted the second highest number of international wine tourists (39,400) Vs 45,000 in Marlborough
International Wine tourists stay longer than all other International tourist groups (27 nights Vs 21 nights)
International Wine tourists spend more ($3,543) than all other International tourist groups ($2,710)
International tourists who visit a winery are highly satisfied with the experience (rated 8.3 out of 10)

Cotter House has earned its Enviro Gold award, from Qualmark!
COTTER HOUSE in advance on its time, has already undertaken major initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint following the lead set by the Copenhagen Climate Summit, "Live the Deal" launched in December 2009.
After several years work, and notwithstanding the great age of the old Regency mansion, Cotter House has achieved the highest environmental rating offered by Qualmark, New Zealand's watch dog for Quality control in the Tourism industry and is happy to be part of an innovative, global campaign to help travel companies and destinations respond to Climate Change, reduce their carbon footprint and move to the Green Economy, and to demonstrate that our tourism sector is acting, not simply talking but working to promote the growth of smart travel - clean green, ethical and quality -the lifeblood of trade, commerce and human connection.
"Live the Deal" follows the pattern established in the UN led Copenhagen" Seal the Deal " campaign by its single minded focus, its simplicity and its broad based engagement goals. It will seek to encourage the sector directly and through representative organizations.
Classic Elegance at Cotter House
Posted by default on November 18th, 2009
Recently I had the opportunity to experience the classic elegance of Cotter House. Gloria was such a warm, welcoming host, she absolutely pampers you from the minute you walk in the door. Cotter House has a rich history and Gloria is happy to share this, and stories of her colourful, busy life. The room was delightful, and beautifully appointed, the bathroom - to die for…..If you love art and sculpture, then this is the place to visit. We also enjoyed the French style high tea, and the very french style full Breakfast, which made us feel like royalty. Take your time, be spoilt and pampered within a piece of Auckland history. Thanks for the hospitality Gloria.

NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
Posted 6 Nov/09
Lonely Planet has voted New Zealand as one of the 10 best destinations in the world
Recommending New Zealand’s too obvious, right? You’re looking for something a bit edgier, under the radar or further off the beaten track. But there’s wisdom in the old saying, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fi x it’, and last time we checked the land of Maori and hobbits certainly didn’t need repairing. NZ’s checklist of essential experiences remains as strong as ever. Spectacular landscapes abound, from sea-level rainforests to plunging glaciers, geothermal springs and barren volcanic plains. Add a hearty pinch of lens-friendly wildlife, proud Maori culture, and fine food and drink, and it’s easy to see why the natives are so chilled.
The vision behind Cotter House is that art can be part of daily life. At Cotter House, art is an unexpected encounter, a new idea, a starting point for a lively conversation. It is integral to the experience at Cotter House Art Hotel; it's not merely decoration but is at the core of the unique character of Cotter House. Visitors find themselves engaging with the art immediately upon arrival. They are surrounded by art objects and antiques from many different periods. Permanent installations such as the Arthur Amon's Hump back Sushi draw people in to the whimsy and fun at the very core of the Cotter House experience..
What will guests rave about to their friends and family?
Art is around every corner at Cotter House — in the courtyard, hallways, gardens and in the Ballroom. Installations flow out onto the garden and the property opens to the public and passersby during Auckland's Heritage Festival, or for private guided viewings. It's a different, and complementary, art experience from what traditional museums offer.
Conde Nast Readers Name New Zealand as 'Top Five Destination'

SLOW LIFE stands for "Sustainable-Local-Organic-Wholesome" and "Learning-Inspiring–Fun-Experiences". This is a trend set by international Spas operating in different settings , keen to manifest their responsibility for the environments they work in.
FLASH! Consumer Confidence and Recognition
Cotter House has been voted 2009 Winner of the "People's Choice Awards" for Christmas Parties.
Congratulations to you and your team!
