Anna Korver

ANNA KORVER - Sculptor

Anna Korver is a remarkably gifted young New Zealand Sculptor.  (http://www.annakorver.co.nz/

A well established New Zealand artist, she has been producing sculpture in wood, stone, metal and other materials. A graduate of the University of Canterbury, School of Fine Arts, she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in sculpture in 2003. Korver has worked nationally and internationally, also producing works on commission.

While Korver utilises a range of media, she favours direct carving and was taught to carve by her father at a young age. Thematically Korver's work explores the place and role of women in society. Through her portrayal of the human form, she expresses her interest in the influence of physical appearance on emotional states. Expressing this theme through natural materials enables a literal interaction between humankind and the environment, as Korver's method of direct carving allows the natural stone or wood to influence the process and the final form.

New developments in her work include the mixing of different materials, in part influenced by the installation process. Korver enjoys this as a statement of human involvement with the environment: “...the figure represents myself in varying states of tension and emotion but the new elements are recognising the structure, the strength and with that the weakness of the communities we are connected to.”

Korver is also a trustee on the board of Eco Artists New Zealand, a charitable trust that uses funds from the sales of art to help environmental projects, specifically focusing on native New Zealand species and their ecosystems.

In the coming months she will be setting up, with a group of artists, a group called The New Zealand Figuratif Sculptors" .  We will follow with interest.
